April 28 Notes

1066- William the Conqueror Battle of Hasting Normans in invade England.
1086- Doomsday book
1087-1100 King William Rufus (son of William) invades Wales and builds castles.
1100-1135- King Henry
1135-1154 King Stephen (nephew of Henry) First Crusade. Jerusalem is captured by the Europeans. Pope Urban II urged the war.
1118- Knights Templar founded to protect Jerusalem and European pilgrims on their way to the cities
1147- Second Crusade
1184- The Inquisition attempts by the Church to convert Jews and heretics, people who said anything against the Church. It becomes infamous in Spain. Heretics are tortured until they confess that they are heretics and then they are killed.
1189-1199 King Richard I the Lion-hearted. He goes away on the Crusade and a mean king takes over in his absence.
Saladin organized all of the Muslims into one body to recapture Jerusalem. The Third Crusade began.
1199-1216 King John, not a nice guy. The fourth crusade was started by him and ends up under the control of Constantinople.
1212- Children's Crusade; young people are fighting against armies. It does not go well.
1215- The Magna Carta is signed. The King came under the power of the law just as everyone else had been. The foundation of European and North American democracy.
1216-1272 King Henry III (Son of John)
1258- Provisions of Oxford forced upon Henry III and a  new form of government limited legal authority.
1272-1307 King Edward (Son of Henry III). The Holy Roman Empire became the region of Europe that is modern Germany and parts of surrounding  countries.
1274- Summa Theologiae is published. It becomes the most important work on theology and still is.
1295- Marco Polo published his tales of China.
1297- William Wallce becomes leader of Scottish resistance.
1307-1327- King Edward II (Son of Edward I)- Knights Templar are murdered by decree of the Pope.
1311-1315 Great Famine in Europe. Crops die, people starve, and things get even worse.
1327-1377
1337- The Hundred Years War starts. Three parts: Edwardian War, Caroline War, Lancastrian War.
1347- Black Death breaks out.
1380- Chaucer writes the Canterbury Tales in Middle English.
1381- Peasants Revolt in England. Peasants rise up against barons and the peasants do not fare well.
1382- The Bible is translated into English.
1399-1413 Reign of King Henry VI
1413-1422 Reign of King Henry V, the greatest King in history.
1422-1461 King Henry VI.
1434- Medici family rises in Florence and supported the Renaissance. Profoundly influential for this Renaissance.

1483-1485 Reign of King Richard III, the beginning of the Tudor dynasty
