In Medieval times religion became a very prominent part of culture. The churches were decorated magnificently and reflected different ideas. They shifted from being fortresses to being passages for the Light. In Medieval times the Churches became centers of learning, not only for religious teachings but also for academic purposes. In other parts of the world learning was not deemed as important as training for the military or having a family. People went without a tried and true education. With devout religions came the hunger for knowledge. A specific example of learnings going on in churches and other religious buildings is Cassiodorus. He was a Roman a contemporary of Boethius and wanted to work towards the preservation of classical knowledge. He encouraged monks to copy manuscripts and thus helped in making the churches centers of learning. This prompted other churches to follow the same practice and churches shortly became integral if one wanted to gain knowledge.
